New Performing Arts Center? How can we vote for something when we hardly know anything about it? We've been told it will cost between $150-175 million. $75 million from the sales tax and the balance, $75-100 million from private investment. That is all we know. What does it look like? How many square feet and seating capacity? Where will it be located? Will it have adequate parking? What will happen with Century II Concert Hall (2,195 seats), Convention Hall (5,022 seats), and Mary Jane Teall Theater (653 seats) with those 7,869 seats no longer being used? Prior public venue, private investment amounts: $25 million for Charles Koch Arena at Wichita State, $14 million for Intrust Bank Arena downtown (total being paid for many years). The Performing Arts Center plans to raise many times these amounts. Any shortfall in fundraising could possibly be paid for by us, the taxpayers. Century II (completed in 1969) has served our community for well over 50 years, hosting nationally recognized Music Theater Wichtita, our outstanding Wichita Symphony, touring Broadway shows, ballet, opera, music concerts, etc. Carnegie Hall (completed in 1893) has served New York City well for 133 years. If improvements need to be made to Century II's performing arts space, the expenditure of possibly a few million dollars will be much less than $175 million for a new performing arts center. How can we vote for a new Performing Arts Center that we hardly know anything about? Save your tax dollars. Vote NO March 3rd on sales tax hike. Paid for by Save Century II Performing Arts, Debra Miller Stevens, Treasurer.
